Who can access Christmas Assistance?

This year the CAP program is specifically targeted at families experiencing financial hardship -with children. Singles are not eligible unless you care for children 16 and under in your home. Youcan still get assistance with food, pet food etc through our emergency relief centres that operate allyear round.

What can I get through the Christmas Assistance Program (CAP) this year?

This year we are offering children’s toys and each family will receive a Festive Food Box withsome festive food items and some regular items as $50 worth of Op Shop vouchers. If you requiregrocery food support, pet food, or personal care products you can visit Hobart City MissionsEmergency relief centres at 50 Barrack Street or 11 Main Road Moonah, during opening hours.

How do I apply?

You can provide an expression of interest now at ER and we will send you an email application inearly November. If you need help, we can do the application for you over the phone or at one of ourEmergency Relief offices.

When will I know if my application was successful?

You will receive an email and/or an sms to your mobile phone on or before 28th of November.

Can my friends apply if they didn’t get the email?

If your friend has a child or children 16 and under and is facing financial hardship, then they canapply online. If we are fully subscribed, preference will be given to those on our database who havepreviously been accepted for support.

I don’t have children but I used CAP last year. Can I still apply?

Previous years you provided more stuff, like food and pet food, why has this reduced?

We are dependent on the generosity of our donors and whatever money Hobart City Mission canput into CAP. We have had to reduce what’s on offer due to our current financial circumstances.Simple groceries, including pet food, and some personal care items are available year-roundthrough our emergency relief centres.

Where do I go to get my presents?

This year, CAP will operate from the Your Church building at 29 Charles Street Moonah. (Theold Coogans Building next to Harris Scarfe) Please enter through the door off the Charles Street carpark at your allocated time.

If I can't get there, can someone else pick up my presents?

Accepted Answer

Yes, they will need to know your exact address as well as the ages of each of your children thatyou applied for.

When do I get my presents?

Accepted Answer

This year, CAP will distribute presents over three days from the 15th to 16th December. Specifictime slots will be allocated for collection. If you have been successful with your application, youwill be advised further details on specific times for collection.

What if I can’t make it on the day or time you allocate to me?

That’s ok, we understand it can be difficult. You are welcome to come to any other timeslot overthe 2 distribution days, but please note priority will be given to those people allocated that timeslot, so you may need to wait a little longer.

If my time slot is not until Day 2, will there be anything left?

The toys and treats are replenished continuously throughout the day to ensure everyone has thesame level of choice, so it doesn't matter if you come on the first or last day, you will still have thesame level of choice of gifts.

My kids are picky, how do I know you will have suitable presents?

Hobart City Mission works hard with our donors and supporters to ensure we have enough toysto meet the needs of every age group. We have used the information you provided in yourapplication to help us determine what toys we need. All our toys come from donations andsupporters so we may not have specific toys you want.

How long will I have to wait in line when I come to collect?

Accepted Answer

We have staggered the timeslots to try and minimise the time you have to wait, but sometimes itcan take a while for families to choose and collect their gifts. We will do our best to make it asquick as possible but we will make sure you have adequate time to pick out gifts when it's yourturn. We also replenish the gifts throughout each timeslot so you will not miss out.

How do I get to the venue on collection day?

The venue is at 29 Charles Street Moonah. There are good bus services along Main RoadMoonah. There is also ample parking off Charles Street.

How many toys and treats will I receive?

Our aim is to provide a toy for each child. This may be one larger or two smaller toys dependingon what you select.

If I can’t make it on any of the 2 days, can I pick it up on another day?

No, unfortunately we have to completely pack-up the venue and don’t have capacity to holdpresents or distribute presents before or after the distribution dates.
